Wish We Were Here!
April 25, 2020. Today was to be Day One of our 19th annual Winnipeg Comedy Festival. Instead it’s Day Eleventy-Seven of isolation and social distancing. Across the country, comedians are sleeping in until Noon and binge-watching Netflix, instead of their usual routine of sleeping in until 11 and binge-watching Netflix. It’s a different world.
I’ve often compared staging a comedy show to building a bonfire on the beach: scatter a few pieces of wood far apart from one another, and you won’t have much luck getting a flame going. But gather a lot in a small area, and a tiny spark can create a roaring inferno. Live comedy thrives in this same closeness, in togetherness – in the exact conditions we need to avoid at the moment.
We wish today we were setting up lights and microphones and tearing tickets. We wish we could spend the week rubbing shoulders and shaking hands with brilliant artists and loyal audience members. Instead, we’ll cross our fingers in anticipation of our new dates in the fall. Until then, our past seasons are available on CBC Gem, courtesy of CBC and our broadcast partner, Frantic Films.
We hope to see you in person in August, when we can gather together in a roaring inferno of laughter.
