For immediate release

TOM CAVANAGH, PHIL HANLEY ADDED TO WINNIPEG COMEDY FESTIVAL LINEUP

March 7, 2014 (Winnipeg) — Fast as lightning, the Winnipeg Comedy Festival has added TV funnyman Tom Cavanagh to its lineup, along with a roster of quick-witted comics ready to turn the event into a real race.

The former Ed star, soon to appear in the pilot for The CW’s new superhero spinoff The Flash, has been confirmed as host of the Festival’s forward-looking Future Show gala, taking place Fri., Apr. 11 at 9:15 p.m. at the Pantages Playhouse Theatre.

Canadian-born Cavanagh’s TV credits include stints on ProvidenceScrubs, Eli Stone and moody mini-series The Capture of the Green River Killer – the latter filmed in Winnipeg, and a perfect fit with the WCF’s murderously macabre 13th anniversary.

Cavanagh joins a number of new additions to the lineup, including rising stand-up star Phil Hanley, who’s been added to the Special Delivery gala hosted by the always unpredictable Tom Green on April 12; former Drew Carey co-star John Caponera, who’ll appear at the First World Problems gala hosted by Daryn Jones on April 11 at 6:45 p.m.; and local fave Paul Rabliauskas, who’s been confirmed as host of the Size Matters show at Gas Station Arts Centre on April 11.

Previously-announced performers include stand-up staple Darrin Rose and local thesp Tricia Cooper, who’ll host dueling dude- and lady-centric lineups on Sat., April 12; and wicked wit Sandra Shamas, who opens the Fest’s gala weekend with a culinary-themed show on Thu., April 10.

Throughout the week, audiences can enjoy WCF crowd-pleasers like the all-local Winnipeg Show, the X-rated Dark and Stormy Show, and live tapings of CBC Radio favourites The Debaters and (new this year) The Irrelevant Show.

The 2014 lineup also includes solo shows by Derek Edwards, Elvira Kurt and Dave Hemstad (among others), a panel discussion on free speech moderated by Winnipeg-to-L.A. transplant Bruce Clark, and the return of Kids in the Hall vet Kevin McDonald’s week-long film festival at the Cinematheque, which this year showcases such under-the-radar classics as Duck Soup, Mel Brooks’ The Producers, andThe Man with 2 Brains.

This year’s Winnipeg Comedy Festival runs April 7-13, 2014. Tickets are available at www.winnipegcomedyfestival.com, in person at the Gas Station Arts Centre (445 River Ave.), or by calling 204-284-9477.
