Dakshana Bascaramurty

Dakshana, Bascaramurty

Dakshana Bascaramurty was not born, but raised, in Winnipeg. She tried her hand at sketch comedy at age 10, when she wrote and performed a skit at a local cultural association’s holiday concert. It involved a bad accent, a horrible appropriated costume and offensive cultural stereotypes -- the sort of racism children get away with because they don’t know any better. Now she sticks to non-fiction storytelling. She’s written for The Ottawa Citizen and The National Post and produced TV and radio news content for CBC Ottawa. She joined the Globe and Mail’s Life section in 2009. After she wrote a Facts & Argument essay for the Globe about her habit of napping on the toilet, her mother asked, "Is that what you want people to read when they Google you?" Sure enough, it’s the top hit when you search her name.
